This book starts out from the author’s perspective. He is researching a tin of pictures and other materials he has found in his back yard. Helen Mason and Josef Landermann have both lost family to the War. Helen becomes angry and bitter, while Josef looks for another way out. When Josef is shot and ends up on the beach by Helen’s home, she takes him in and helps him heal. Helen and Josef find peace and salvation along the way.
"The Heart Mender" has great characters and a lot of historical facts. While most of the story flowed smoothly, sometimes it detoured into facts that, while historically accurate, do nothing to further the plot. And while the book gives important explanations of forgiveness, it does not show us how Helen and Josef found forgiveness.

I just finished "The Heart Mender" and loved it. I think Helen learned to forgive through Danny's comments to her. I also think Josef also helped Helen learn to forgive by example. Andy Andrews has written another book that teaches us a valuable principle!
