BRC: How would you describe your book?
I’m not sure. Supernatural? Suspense? Metaphysical? Romance?
All those elements are in BOOK OF DAYS in abundance, but none of them dominates. I think with ROOMS and BOOK OF DAYS I'm kind of playing in my own genre. I'll just quote what Publishers Weekly said, "Rubart has created a page turner," and what CBA Retailing Magazine said, "What more could you want from a novel."
BRC: It sounds interesting. Is there a message you hope it conveys?
Three messages: Hope, forgiveness for others and for ourselves and an eternal perspective on life.
My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2000 and passed away last May. The book was inspired by him so it is an incredible honor to have part of his story immortalized in print.
BRC: I'm sorry for your loss. What a joy that you could honor your father's memory in this way.
Tell us, what did you dislike most about writing BOOK OF DAYS?
The deadline. I got the offer in December and turned the book in in February. I had a good percentage of the book done when I got the offer, but it was still a very tight turn around.
BRC: That was quick! But you came through. What inspired you to become a writer?
The same thing that inspired me to start breathing when I was born. I can’t not do it.
BRC: Tell us about your writing process.
With ROOMS I did it total seat of my pants. I wrote a bunch of scenes, then pasted them all together. With BOOK OF DAYS I had a semi-rough outline. With my third novel, THE CHAIR (currently finishing up) I went back to SOTP. But my key to keeping it all straight no matter which way I write is to stick a set of note cards up on the wall of my writing room so I can see the whole story at a glance. Each card contains one scene.
BRC: What are you working on now?
Starting to brainstorm on my fourth novel, BACKSPACE which I’m really excited about as I’m writing it with my son, Taylor. Also, I’m developing a set of products to help writers market themselves more effectively.
BRC: What books do you enjoy reading?
This is sad, but I’ve been so busy I’ve had little time to read lately. But when I do I enjoy novels by folks like Stephen Lawhead, Orson Scott Card, C.S. Lewis, Karen Hancock among others.
BRC: Where can readers buy your book?
Just about anywhere: LifeWay, Borders, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Family Christian, in brick and mortar as well as their online stores, and of course Amazon
BRC: Where can readers find you online?
Facebook: James L. Rubart

Nice interview. I like books that cross genres--less predictable, more intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Sheila. Jim's books do surprise the reader.
