Whistlestop Book Review: "White Doves" by Shannon Taylor Vannatter

My Review:

White Doves author, Shannon Taylor Vannatter, explains how the post office in Romance, Arkansas came to be the inspiration for the second novel in her Romance Trilogy. The post office creates a unique hand-stamped postmark each year to use from February 1– 15. People often send wedding invitations and Valentine’s cards to the town to be re-mailed bearing the romantic postmark.  Such local flavor is the perfect setting for a romance between a postmaster and a mail-carrier. Ms. Vannatter playfully sprinkles her book with plays on words such as “mail,” “male,” and “Priority Male.”

Laken Kroft, new postmistress in town, doesn’t know what hit her when mail-carrier, Hayden Winters introduces himself. The story revolves around their relationship, however surprises abound when new characters are introduced and their presence brings twists to the plot. My favorite character, Brady, a boy in a wheelchair from a terrible accident, oozes forgiveness to those who have abandoned him.  His healing influence is a touching thread throughout the story. The author’s sensitive voice to handicapped accessibility is commendable.

Vannatter, a pastor’s wife, stay-at-home mom, writer, finds time to teach fiction writing workshops and speak at church conferences.  Her short stories have appeared in various periodicals.  A unique hobby of Vannatter’s is collecting seashells which she calls “proof of God’s intricate creation.”

This Christian romance novel is recommended for anyone whose heart has been captured by someone who has not yet found God. This Heartsong Presents book will be released April 2011.

BRC: Great! What type of books do you write?

I have quite a back list consisting of both historical and contemporary stories. Some are novella collections, some are short novels, and one is a long novel. 

BRC: That does sound interesting. Tell me, why do you write?

BRC: Interesting! Thanks for that glimpse into your faith. How would you describe your newest release?

Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico, is my Heroine-in-peril, Mail-order-bride gone awry story. It's a story of unmerited forgiveness, and understanding the love God has for us.

BRC: Which is your favorite character from your book?

This book is peopled with interesting characters, but I think my favorite is Jeremiah Denison, the hero, or maybe it's Maddy Mercer, the heroine, or . . .

BRC: I can see how it might be hard to choose. Do you have a funny or touching story that relates to your book?

I'm what's called a seat-of-the-pants writer. And because I am, God often leads my writing in a direction that I hadn't even imagined. That happened with this book, and it became a much stronger story for the changes. 

BRC: Intriguing. Tell us about your writing process.

I let a story percolate or stew in my head for a while before I start putting it down on paper. A lot of the story develops during this time. But then when I start writing, I start at the beginning and write straight to the end.

BRC: What will you write next?

Since this book released, I've signed a three-book contract with another publisher. I have written the first book in the McKenna's Daughters series, and I'm working on the second book right now.

BRC: Which books do you recommend to readers?

This depends entirely on what the person likes to read. Pirate's Prize is good for people who like adventure and pirates. If the reader likes mysteries, I suggest Double Deception or Wild Prairie Roses.  For romantic suspense, Cranberry Hearts. Historical romance, Minnesota Brothers and of course, Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico.

Meet and Greet: Shannon Taylor Vannatter

Shannon Taylor Vannatter married her high school sweetheart. Since then her husband answered the call to preach and they became first-time parents 16 ½ years into their marriage. 26 years later, she is a stay-at-home mom/pastor’s wife/writer. When not writing, she runs circles in the care and feeding of her husband Grant, their eight-year-old son, and their church congregation. Home is a central Arkansas zoo with two charcoal gray cats, a chocolate lab, and three dachshunds in weenie dog heaven. If given the chance to clean house or write, she’d rather write. Her goal is to hire Alice from the Brady Bunch.

Her series with Heartsong Presents launched in May with White Roses, followed by White Doves in October, and White Pearls in January. Each title releases to the 10,000-member Heartsong book club before releasing to stores six months later. All three books are set in Romance and Rose Bud, Arkansas. Brides and lovebirds take advantage of the re-mailing program to have wedding invitations and Valentines cards mailed from Romance with a unique postmark. Romance also hosts several annual weddings with Valentine’s Day the most popular date.

BRC: How would you describe White Pearls?

Shell Evans and Ryler Grant are both unsaved, drifting and searching. They've had a previous intimate relationship and fell for each other, but it scared them to death because they've always been no string types. When they're forced to work together, restoring a historical plantation into a bed and breakfast, they've realized their lives are empty, but they don't know what to do about it. It's the story of two lost souls who have tried everything to feel complete, yet they're still empty.

What message do you hope your book conveys? 

That we all have a God-shaped hole in our souls and we'll never be complete until we accept Christ.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book? It was fun and different writing both a hero and heroine who were unsaved. Exploring their darkest thoughts and immorality. Writing a character with no moral code opens up lots of possibilities, but I didn't want to go far enough to offend anyone. It was a delicate balance.

What did you dislike most about writing this book? When it ended. Back when I was writing the first book in the series, White Roses, I thought Hmm, I'd like to explore the blond bimbo and convert her. It was fun slowly changing her and watching her blossom.

What inspired you to become a writer? 

I've answered this question before in a previous interview here, so I'll expand. I couldn't find any clean romances anymore and didn't know the inspirational market existed. At the same time, I had a story in my head from the time I was 15. I'd replay it over and over, but didn't know what to do with it. Finally, 15 years later, I realized it could be a book. And it was, my first really badly written manuscript. Maybe someday I'll try to rework it with what I know now.

BRC: What are you working on now? 

I'm reworking a rodeo series and a longer romance between an estranged married couple.
What books do you enjoy reading? Inspirational romance. I don't get to read as much anymore, but I really like Christine Lynxwiler's books and I've only read one of Annalisa Doughty's, but I really enjoyed it.

Whistlestop Book Review: "In the Manor of the Ghost" by Tina Pinson

Tina Pinson’s gift for storytelling drew me in and held my attention throughout her In the Manor of the Ghost, a gothic mystery.  

Kaitlin, a widow who lost her husband and infant in a fire, enters into a marriage-of-convenience with  Devlon, owner of a reportedly haunted manor.  But the manor seems to be haunted by more than a ghost. Allegations of murder, a traumatized child, domestic violence and shadows that walk the halls at night all intrude into the peace Kaitlin tries to weave around those she comes to love. Dear Reader,

I’ve been writing since I was eight, and arting even longer. I love to draw and have just recently

found an outlet that sort of combines with my writing. I’ve got four kids and four grandchildren.

My oldest son is serving in Afghanistan right now (all prayers blessed and appreciated) and his

family lives almost 2,000 miles away from me.

I was writing middle grade fiction when a Christian romance writer friend read something of mine that I’d written for fun. She encouraged me to write romance, then arranged a novella set for myself, herself and two other writers, planning to submit it to her publisher. I wrote my part in about three weeks, and right about then, the publisher announced they were no longer doing novella sets. But I loved the story and finally found a home for Keeper of My Heart with White Rose Publishing.

Rebecca is hurt and lonely, and isolates herself. However, she finds herself thrown together with the new veterinarian in town. She’s afraid that even if he’s not just passing through, he’ll still hurt her, and she can’t understand why God didn’t protect her from the pain in the first place.

Through Rebecca's story, I wanted to show one aspect of free will—how God is  always with us, even if He doesn’t change the behavior of others to suit us.

I have a lot of future writing projects. I’m almost finished with Cinderella Reversed. She’s got a death sentence crouching inside her head; he has to marry to save his company from his stepmother. She’s been in love with him since he hired her; he’s been watching her walk from behind for the same length of time. She wonders why God is calling her home so soon; he wonders what God has to do with anything. Lainie Harper overhears Tanner Elliott’s stepsisters gossiping and starts a roller coaster ride that nearly pitches her in front of a bus, a runaway car, and someone who wants her out of the way. She just isn’t sure who that person is.

I’m also working on a darker mystery, titled Stolen Sun, and another about twins Holly and Noelle, titled The Christmas House.

I read, aside from a few non-fiction books, Christian romance, mysteries, children’s books (middle grade novels and some of the books my teenaged daughter insists I need to read). My house is pretty much decorated in books.

Hi, I am Margaret Daley and I write for Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense. I am thrilled to join you today to tell you a little bit about me and my writing. I have been writing for over 30 years. I just recently sold my 75th book. I love writing Christian romances and suspense books. 

Last Friday I had surgery on my right shoulder because my rotator cuff was torn. So I am writing this using MacSpeech. It feels strange to dictate what I want to write. I have to learn to do things with my left hand. This is hard because I am right handed. We learn to take things for granted until something like this happens. I never realized how much I used my right hand until now. 

I am the Volunteer Officer for American Christian fiction writers. Through this organization I have met some amazing writers and industry professionals. ACFW is a wonderful place where writers can network and learn the craft of writing. I would not be where I am today without ACFW. 

This month I have a new book out called A Daughter for Christmas. It is the third book in my Helping Hands Homeschooling series. The back blurb says: 

Dr. Max Connors had no idea he had fathered a child 13 years ago. Or that his baby girl had been given up for adoption. Dear Reader,

Hi, I’m Shannon Taylor Vannatter. I appreciate Janalyn for inviting me back to Book Readers Central. I live in rural Arkansas, am a pastor’s wife and stay-at-home mom. I’d like to tell you why I started writing inspirational romance.

I started reading romance at the age of twelve. My mom would scour the library until she found wholesome books. After I married and went to work, I didn’t have time to read for several years. About five years into our marriage, my husband started working from noon until eight or nine in the evening. My workday ended at five and my evenings were suddenly long, boring, and lonely.

To fill the empty hours, I started reading again and was amazed that there so few clean romances. In the span of about ten years, wholesome books had disappeared. If I managed to find a clean read, I’d get something else by the same author, and be disappointed to find it wasn’t clean.

My husband began working normal hours and my reading ended once again. I had my own romance going on. Fast forward about eight years and my husband started working evening hours again. Once again, I turned to the library and was once again disappointed. I thought about the story I’d carried in my head since I was fifteen and finally realized it could be a book. I promised myself that if I ever got a computer, I’d write a clean romance like I’d love to read but couldn’t find.

Three years later, my father-in-law gave me his old computer. As soon as we got it set up, I started writing that book in my head. The more I wrote, the more my characters prayed, talked to God, and went to church. I realized that I couldn’t just write a clean romance, that I don’t believe romance can exist without God in the center of the relationship. And so my clean romance turned into an inspirational romance. After I finished it, I went to the library to find out how to get it published. The librarian led me to a Market Guide that listed all the publishers and what they were looking for and I realized there was an inspirational market.

For years, I’d gone to the Christian book stores and went straight to the music, totally missing out on all those clean romances. It took nine and a half years to learn my craft and sign a contract. It wasn’t an easy road to publication, but well worth it. It’s indescribable how it makes me feel when a reader takes the time to e-mail or send a letter letting me know they enjoyed my book. It’s still surreal to know that people I don’t know are reading the words God put on my heart.

White Roses is the first book in a series. I feel a kinship with the heroine, Adrea because she’s falling in love with a pastor. The series is set in real Arkansas towns, Romance and Rose Bud. I based the church on a real church in Rose Bud and featured the Romance Waterfalls where people get married, and the Rambler Café in Rose Bud. Brides and couples mail their wedding invitations and Valentines cards to the Romance Post Office for a unique, romantic postmark and this local flavor is worked into the series.

In book 2, White Doves, the heroine is the Romance postmaster. Book 3, White Pearls is set in the historic Darden Gifford house in Rose Bud. In the book, the heroine is restoring the house and turning it into a bed and breakfast. I enjoyed setting the stories in these tiny towns and researching the area.

Whistlestop Wednesday Book Review: "Seeds of Summer" by Deborah Vogts

SEEDS OF SUMMER will take you into the Flint Hills, one of the last tallgrass prairie regions in the world, for a touching love story. Rodeo Queen Natalie Adams tries to conquer adversity on her own when she suffers disappointment, tragedy and broken family relationships. Jared Logan only wants to help, and although Natalie views the handsome young pastor with suspicion, she's in no position to turn down a helping hand. When their attraction grows, Jared holds to his principles and Natalie faces the God she rejected to go it alone.  

Deborah Vogts vivid writing brings to life the gentle hills covered in bluestem, the wide-open skies of Kansas and the melding together of two hearts. I couldn't recommend this book more for women who enjoy contemporary romance. I approve this book for teens because of its wholesome relationships and its honest portrayal of the temptations and challenges teens face.

Whistlestop Wednesday Book Review: STRAIGHT FOR THE HEART

Sarah Oakley and her young siblings flee from their outlaw uncle and hope to find a better life. Things go from bad to worse, however, when Sarah is arrested as an outlaw herself. The men of the wild west town of Medora, North Dakota want to lynch her, that is unless one of them doesn't up and marry her first. Enter Quinn McFarland, a handsome rancher who needs a wife, if only to stop his grandmother from sending for any more mail order brides for him. While marriage to Quinn might solve Sarah's immediate problems, she can't help longing for true love.

The plot for this light historical romance delivered no surprises and suffered at times from believability. However, the colorful characters, authentic details and accomplished writing engage the reader throughout the story.

I recommend this book for women who enjoy historical romance.

Meet and Greet Monday: Gail Sattler

Author Gail Sattler lives in Vancouver, BC, where you don’t have to shovel rain, with her husband, sons, dogs, lizard (who is quite cuddly for a reptile), and bass guitar.

BRC: Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started writing.
I say on my blog that I’m a wife, mom, writer, musician, dog owner, and lizard lover. I haven’t written a story about my lizard yet, but my first published book was inspired by my first dog, who has now gone to that great doghouse in the sky. I’d sent a photo of my dog to the art department at Barbour so they would get the dog right for the cover, and they ended up giving me the original artwork. The dog is perfect except for some reddy-brownish color on her beard (it’s a Schnauzer), which was not in the photo. My husband laughed at that, and said it was okay, the dog had obviously got into the spaghetti (my dog’s favorite meal) and it would just wash off. That painting is framed and still hanging above my writing computer. Spaghetti sauce and all.


BRC: That’s funny. I’m sure many authors have stories about the cover art of their books that readers would love to hear. Do you have any interesting stories to tell us about the cover of your new book, The Narrow Path?

I’m glad you asked, because there is a very interesting story behind the cover of this one. Because of the Mennonite characters my editor wanted something featuring the hat worn by the hero, which in turn made me want to see the hero wearing the hat. But because of the modern heroine, the cover wouldn’t be a true representation of the book just to show the Old Order hero. So I wanted to show both. However, they needed two models, and they’d run out of time for their deadline. But that problem was solved when two people who work in the office at Abingdon posed for the cover.

BRC: That’s different. It obviously worked, the cover is quite intriguing. How did they make that work?
Michael and Christa were really good sports. The whole office helped, too. Everyone helped to collect all the accessories we needed as mentioned in the book – they had the hat, but needed suspenders and a leather-bound Bible for Ted. We needed a red cell phone for Miranda, as that phone plays into the story, and someone in the office actually owned a red cell phone. Together, they got everything needed that was specifically mentioned in the book - the red t-shirt, red nail polish and lipstick, and even red earrings for “Miranda”, except with Christa’s long hair, you can’t see them in the pose they used for the cover. And then there was more accessories to hunt and find, for the book trailer.

BRC: You mean there’s more? Tell us about the book trailer.
It is very special that the people on the cover are the same people who are in the book trailer. Not many authors can say they have their hero and heroine from the cover in their book trailer, but I do. Again, Michael and Christa graciously posed for the photos in the book trailer, and again, the ladies in the office gathered the accessories needed – again including the red cell phone, but also the iPod, mints, lipgloss, and Abingdon provided the program disk for her Bible, which she has installed on her cell phone. Someone even had a red purse, which was an added surprise. I just love that purse! I want one of those. Then they took everything outside and took the photo in someone’s car, because the scene was to portray the way Miranda spreads everything out in her car, when she’s back at home in Seattle, sitting in traffic.
